Let’s work it out together.

My name is Michaela Louie, and I use she/they/ her/them pronouns.

I am Nuu Chah Nulth from Ahousaht on my father’s side of the family and Welsh, Scottish and English on my mother’s side. I was born and raised on the traditional territories of the Lekwungen speaking peoples (The Songhees, Esquimalt and W̱SÁNEĆ. I grateful for all of the relations I have on this land, and in this territory.

I hold a BA and am nearing completion of my MA in Child and Youth Care. For the past 4 years I have been working as a Youth and Family Outreach worker in community, and have gained so much from all of the youth, parents, and community partners I have engaged with. I also hold experience running groups and community programs, working with gender diverse youth and their families, providing harm reduction support, crisis response work, and art and land based research groups in community.

No matter what position I find myself in, I approach my work through a two-eyed seeing framework, holding both western modalities and Indigenous ways of knowing, doing, and being close to my heart. I would describe my practice as decolonial, person-centered and strengths based, and I include modalities such as narrative therapies, emotion focused therapies, and solution focused therapies. I strive to meet people where they are at, and work alongside them in a good way while holding up their strength and dignity. We both have a lot to learn from each other, and I always want to honour where you come from, and where you have been.

In between work and finishing school, I spend a lot of time at the gym powerlifting, going to the beach, spending quality time with my three cats, and enjoying live music with my husband and close friends. I believe in taking a holistic approach to my well being, so that I can show up in the best way for my community.
